The right time to buy a new computer is when you need one. If your system isn’t up-to-date, you might be missing tweaks that could improve your experience. Apple focused on improving macOS performance over the last few iterations of its desktop and mobile operating systems.

If you're not comfortable at the command line, there are some GUI frontends available, such as arRsync - I've not tried that, just found it via google search for "rsync mac gui".You can check some components manually with the right tools. If you want something that's entirely under your control, I would look for something based on rsync - a proven unix file sync utility which comes with OS X.
